Buying Guide: Anbernic RG Cube vs. RG CubeXX?

The community is divided on the new RG Cubexx. Some people are excited because they believe the RG Cube is too strong and costly, while others are tired of the XX product line. No one is forcing you to purchase every handheld, and I am in the camp of people who want options. You might find a handheld that you like if you wait a month. It's also intriguing since AYN has recently been making changes with the same chip, and people are complimenting them. That is a discussion for a different time.

When I first received the RG Cube, I truly liked it. This was my first 1x1 screen, and I had fun using it. I agree that you don't need all that extra power to utilise that screen. Therefore, I was also eager to test out the new RG Cubexx. It was intriguing, though, to stretch a few GameCube games. Which do you like better?

What's Different

Naturally, the chip and the cost make the most difference. The RG40XXV, RG35XX SP, and other models use the same chip as the new RG Cube XX. The Unisoc T820, which the RG406V and RG556 shared, was present in the original RG Cube. Accordingly, the original Cube will run Android, and the XX will run Linux.

The power and volume buttons on the RG Cubexx are located on the top instead of the right-hand side, like on the original, which is another minor modification. In any case, I never had any trouble pressing those, but the top is a far more useful location. Regarding button placement, fans of the RG Cubexx will be happy to learn that the D-pad is on top of the device rather than at the bottom, as it was on the original. Additionally, this is more useful for the chipset and the games it supports.

These two devices also have rather distinct triggers. The smaller R1/L1 of the new RG Cubexx is not ideal for my large hands. These press inward or outward rather than downward, as hall triggers do. I detest it to the core. At first, I believed they were broken, which bothers me. Once more, you won't use this chip and 1x1 screen to play games requiring both triggers.

Comparing Them

I own the black RG Cubexx and the off-white RG Cube. I do not know if this is true for all XX models, but I like the XX's bezel because it's much less noticeable. The original's white screen has a less appealing white bezel surrounding it.

There are minor differences in the D-pads. With the new RG Cubexx, I get more pivots, and it clicks more. Both are good Sega-style D-pads, but I like the new XX's more clicky feel. These new-style R2/L2 buttons may be for someone, but as I mentioned before, I still prefer the triggers on the original Cube.

The cardinal snapping problem with the analogue sticks is present in the new and old XX versions. I've discovered that some individuals do, in fact, like this, particularly when it comes to arcade games. This could benefit both of them because they have 1x1 screens, which are excellent for some vertical shooters.

Since the XX model is not intended to outperform the original, it is challenging to compare the performance. It all boils down to whether you prefer an Android or Linux experience with a fantastic CFW. Are you happy with PS1 and below, or would you like to play any GameCube or PS2 games? Performance is entirely a matter of preference.

Both gadgets are comparable in the hand. The feel and grip are the same. I found the original RG Cube to be pretty comfy, so it's fantastic that I can't perceive a significant change in that area.

Which Should You Get?

Since it depends on your intended use of the item, it is difficult to suggest one. Do you want to play GBC games on a cosy, 1x1 device? Then, purchase the new RG Cube XX and save some money. Do you wish to play on more expensive systems despite favouring Android? Obtain the RG Cube.

I'm finding it difficult to relate to and comprehend the rage surrounding this gadget. Since everything I heard about the original's release was that it was too costly and powerful, there is a need and want for it. After hearing the criticisms, Anbernic developed a weaker and less expensive solution. Although both are useful gadgets, the Cube remains my year's biggest surprise hit.
