Anbernic Taking on the Miyoo Mini Flip

You will undoubtedly be thrilled about Anbernic's next alleged gadget if you were thrilled about the Miyoo Mini Flip. It appears that the RG35XX SP is getting close to release, based on a video that @GameboyJuntaro leaked on Twitter.

The brief movie, which features a clamshell handheld with a transparent blue shell, lasts only four seconds. Then, for a short comparison, the individual sets a Game Boy Advance SP down next to it. Strangely, the shell's exterior lid also has a logo. However, it's challenging to determine if it illuminates or not.

The new RG35XX 2024 shows that Anbernic is dedicated to growing its RG35XX portfolio. Nevertheless, we anticipate that the RG35XX SP will provide comparable specifications to the RG35XX Plus and H. In light of this, the following is what we should expect:

  • Display: 3.5-inch IPS (640 x 480)
  • Processor: Allwinner H700
  • GPU: Dual-core G31 MP2
  • RAM: 1GB LPDDR4
  • Storage: 64GB TF/MicroSD

It is unlikely that Anbernic will make significant internal changes. The RG35XX SP can play games up to N64 and PSP without any difficulty as long as the H700 is in control. Although we strongly doubt it, there is always a chance that anything will change.

Anbernic RG35XX SP vs Miyoo Mini Flip

The design change from the leaked Miyoo Mini Flip is sure to spark some discussion. Anbernic is happy to introduce the RG35XX SP sans joysticks. In the meantime, multiple joysticks are a common feature of the Mini Flip that we have seen.

While it is undoubtedly friendly to have joysticks for games other than the GBA, there is a risk involved. You don't want the top of the joystick to touch the screen once you snap the lid shut. You then encounter a cracked screen when you return to play a game later.

There haven't been many clamshell throwback handhelds released up to this point. The Retroid Pocket Flip, the most recent of these, was pretty pricey and is now discontinued. In the meanwhile, the 2020 Powkiddy V90 has somewhat of a "cult following." That is true even though its overall performance is pretty limited, and it is not a very nice device.

Regardless of whether you're more thrilled with the new RG355X SP or the Miyoo offering, hopefully, this indicates that 2024 will be the "Year of the Clams."
