AYN Odin 2 Portal: Everything You Need To Know
Just as the weekly Retro Handhelds Podcast was going off, AYN dropped a big surprise when the firm unveiled the Odin 2 Portal handheld. This one came out of an unexpected field since things have been tranquil in the AYN camp since the Odin 2 Mini was announced.
Stubbs Goes In-Depth With the Odin 2 Portal
Want to know more about the Odin 2 Portal? How does it compare to the AYANEO Pocket EVO? Watch the video above as Stubbs thoroughly compares these two new handhelds.
AYN Odin 2 Portal: What We Know
As of now, we know that the Odin 2 Portal has a 7-inch OLED touchscreen display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. Additionally, AYN disclosed that a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor will power it, though at first, she refrained from disclosing the precise CPU in charge. As was later confirmed, it should come as no surprise that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 would be at the forefront.
Looking at the teaser images and video, we can see that the Odin 2 Portal has the same ABXY layout as the Odin 2 and has stacked shoulder buttons. Four shortcut buttons are on the front, Power and Volume are on top, and macro buttons are on the back. As for the controls, AYN confirmed that the Odin 2 Portal has Hall Effect joysticks with RGB lighting, which isn't surprising.
The Odin 2 Portal features stacked shoulder buttons, four shortcut buttons on the front, Power and Volume on top, and macro buttons on the back, as seen from the teaser images and video. The controls feature Hall Effect joysticks with RGB lighting, which isn't shocking.
The bottom of the device has a USB-C port, along with a microSD card slot and a 3.5mm headphone socket, which should allow the existing Odin Dock to operate with the new portable.
As the guys from the RH Podcast pointed out, the Odin 2 Portal looks surprisingly similar to the Retroid Pocket 5. It starts with the bezel-less display but extends to using an all-glass front panel.
Last, AYN quickly altered the name immediately after the announcement, changing the YouTube video and Indiegogo page from "Odin Portal" to "Odin 2 Portal."
UPDATE 10/22: The Odin 2 Portal Ships in December
The Odin 2 Portal will be available for pre-order in less than twenty-four hours (as of this writing)! The Indiegogo campaign has a new landing page detailing the different tiers and some offered benefits.
The Odin 2 Portal "Base" model, which comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, is priced at $299 during Super Early Bird. However, you can only receive the Black colourway at this tier, so there is just one colour option. If you want the White or Indigo, you will need to upgrade to the Odin 2 Portal Pro, which costs $379 during the Super Early Bird deal.
Many people have questioned whether AYN will make it to market before Ayaneo's Pocket EVO, but it doesn't appear to be the case. According to the IGG page, all of the Odin 2 Portal models are anticipated to ship in December.
UPDATE 10/16: Colors and More Details Provided
Now that the secret has been revealed, AYN is providing additional details regarding the Odin 2 Portal. First, the Portal will be available in Silver in addition to Black, the only colour featured in the promotional film. Interestingly, the A+B buttons will be red and green, respectively, and the right joystick will be yellow.
Regarding the joysticks, it has been established that the Odin 2 Portal will not support full-size sticks. However, these won't be the same as the Odin 2 and Odin 2 Mini because the Portal's joysticks are anticipated to have a more excellent range of motion than those of the earlier versions. The fact that AYN would provide two "joystick hats with different heights and textures" has also been verified.
Finally, some information regarding the display was provided because there have been inquiries concerning the Portal's brightness. The Odin 2 Portal reportedly offers up to 800 nits of brightness and HDR capabilities, so AYN meets all the requirements.
UPDATE: A Third Color Enters The Fray
We discovered that AYN was concealing a third hue from us. The Odin 2 Portal will be available in Indigo, Black, and Silver. The absence of the yellow thumbstick on the silver model is another unexpected alteration from the first pictures circulated. With the Indigo colouring, it is hoped there will be a means to replace this.
UPDATE (10/21): Odin 2 Portal Specs and Pricing
Early Monday morning, AYN provided nearly all additional information regarding the impending Odin 2 Portal. This covers the retail price for each model and the two distinct Early Bird IGG pricing categories. The Odin 2 Portal "Base" will cost $299 for the Super Early Bird tier, the Pro will cost an additional $80 at $379, and the Max will cost $479 after the IGG campaign launches. Retail prices range from $349 to $529, depending on the edition.
The Portal's Base, Pro, and Max versions will be available in three flavours, just like the Odin 2. The Odin 2 Portal Base has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, the Pro has 12GB and 512GB, and the Max has 16GB and 1TB. These are the only variations between the three.
AYN made a significant change and offered confirmation shortly after updating this article. The Odin 2 Portal was initially supposed to have a 6,600mAh battery. However, after some criticism on social media and Discord, this will be changed to an 8,000mAh cell.
Finally, if you want to order one for yourself, we don't have to wait much longer. On Wednesday, October 23, at 8 a.m. ET, the Indiegogo campaign will launch. Therefore, to get the Super Early Bird pricing, you must get up early and act fast.
The Indiegogo page is open right now, but it's just a landing page where you can input your email address to receive updates when new information becomes available.
