The Pimax Portal Retro: A Preview

What do you get when a handheld device with an Android operating system and magnetic controllers is designed with augmented reality gamers in mind? Some may say, "Too modern for me!" or worse, "We detest magnets!" How do they operate? What would you do if you were the firm that made that handheld device? Naturally, Pimax releases a "retro" version of the device! If you remove those annoying magnets, eliminate the AR angle, and reduce the total cost, retro handheld enthusiasts will be more interested. The Pimax Portal Retro is now available.

Details

For those unfamiliar with the original Portal, it has a Qualcomm XR2 SoC, a 4K QLED or LCD screen, five rear-facing cameras, and detachable and magnetic controllers. Which of those statements about the Portal Retro is still true? You've been listening, I see! Yes, that is the SoC. Like the standard Portal, the Retro will include the same processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. For all enthusiasts of high refresh rates, the approximately 5.5" screen will only be available as an LCD and will be 2K instead of 4 K. It will also feature a refresh rate of 120Hz. There will only be white available. Therefore, the colour options will be as limited as possible. One benefit is that the Retro will weigh a few grams less than the other models in the Portal range after the magnets and cameras are removed. Except for these differing characteristics, the remainder of the device—including the dubious d-pad—will be nearly identical to its predecessor.

Price and Availability

What does that mean for the Retro's price? It is between $70 and $69 (excellent), less than the $299 base model Portal. Combining that with a fantastic screen, analogue triggers, a decent processor, and a sturdy Android design might be a respectable competitor in the retro handheld market.

The Pimax Portal Retro may be ordered on their website and should be shipped in a week or two. This is the device for you if you want to play Android games with an integrated controller or if you need to fill a gap in your collection of vintage handhelds.
