Anbernic RG406V: A Worthy Successor to the RG405V? [UPDATE]

With the recent release of the RG40XXV and the upcoming release of another handheld, Anbernic is returning to its hectic release schedule. The long-awaited successor to the RG405V, the Anbernic RG406V, has now been unveiled.

Since Anbernic like leaking tidbits of information, not many specifications have been made public yet. Nevertheless, the release did validate some of the RG406V's specifications.

  • Display: 4-inch IPS Touchscreen / 960 x 720
  • 5G Wi-Fi Module
  • Supports 1080p Output via USB-C
  • Bluetooth 5.0

In case the video didn't make it clear, this is yet another Android-powered handheld device that provides an additional degree of versatility. The RG406V is reportedly rumoured to handle Wii and 3DS titles, and the 4-inch screen allows "PS2 games to be displayed at 1.5x" scaling. Anbernic did not specify which CPU is being used in this instance, but we can presume that the T820 will be in charge.

Transparent Black, an off-white shell, and an SNES-style are the three colour options that the RG406V will be available in at launch, according to the video. Regretfully, Anebrnic is dodging the popular wood-grain case from earlier iterations.

Waiting for Pricing

We anticipate further details from Anbernic in the days ahead, but the RG406V arrives at an odd moment: not only is Ayaneo's Pocket DMG about to go on sale, but Retroid has been making waves with the Pocket Mini and Pocket 5.

In addition, the business recently unveiled the RG40XXV, a vertical handheld. We must question whether the RG406V makes much sense, even though it is obviously far more powerful and performant. The price will be the deciding factor. We anticipate that the RG405V's successor will cost around $130 as a point of comparison.

Price and Pre-Order Details

The wait is almost over if you've been yearning to get your hands on the RG406V. Anbernic is planning to launch pre-orders for its next handheld on September 19 at 6 AM EST or 3 AM PST. Pricing for the RG406V is right around what we expected; we saw it would retail for $165. However, Anbernic will be offering a $10 discount to those who pre-order, bringing the price down to $155 with free shipping. We've seen Anbernic do this with previous handheld releases, and it's good to know the company's most recent product carries on the tradition.

You should bookmark one of the two (or both) sites below if you wish to place a preorder for the RG406V for yourself. The listings will be available soon before the pre-order sales start, but they are not yet live.
