Retro Handhelds Weekly: Anbernic RG40XX, muOS Beans, and Much More
Greetings and welcome to Retro Handhelds Weekly's debut! Since we're still figuring out how to keep everyone updated on the world of retro handhelds, this is our inaugural edition. Every week, we'll walk you through the stories that made it to RH's front page in one form or another. This involves presenting other entertaining articles and videos that the Retro Handhelds team distributes during the week, and any news on new hardware and custom firmware updates.
Hardware
If we know anything about vintage handhelds, it's that something new is always coming out. Because some businesses release new handhelds every other week, smartphones are worse. The good news is that there are plenty of possibilities.
Anbernic RG40XX
You would be mistaken if you believed Anbernic might want to stand back for a while. Following the arrival of the RG Cube at homes, a leaked video reveals another Anbernic handheld. This time, it is called the "Anbernic RG40XX" and resembles a cross between the RG Cube and the RG405M. The same Allwinner H700 chip is anticipated to be employed as the RG35XX series, albeit not much more is known now.

Powkiddy V10
Other than the RGB20SX, Powkiddy has been comparatively silent. However, an official landing page was created just over a week after the Powkiddy V10 was unveiled. Although the V10 is not yet available for pre-order, the listing indicates it will retail for $59.99 and be on sale for $39.99.

Ayaneo Pocket MICRO
Although the Pocket S launch has captured much of Ayaneo's attention, the firm provided us with some gorgeous teases of the Pocket MICRO. The Pocket MICRO may become a popular product if it is formally released, even though the price has not yet been disclosed.
GameMT JellyMini E5
We occasionally wonder if a business asks ChatGPT to build a mobile device and then attempts to manufacture whatever it produces. With the GameMT JellyMini E5, that is just what we believe. It reportedly has a 5-inch display and can play games up to the PS1. But we can't help but wonder about their intentions when creating the design.
OneXPlayer Mini
You're in luck if you like the OneXPlayer but feel that it's simply too big. The business recently unveiled the OneXPlayer Mini, a handheld device featuring an 8.8-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. With up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, it is powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. The base model of the X1 Mini costs $899, and the IndieGoGo campaign is now active. However, that price will increase to $1,099 at the end of the campaign, so you should board the train now.
StoneEdge Retro Lite CM5
With the release of the Retro Lite CM5, a new Open-Source project is imminent. The developers posted a list of supplies and instructions on GitHub rather than a mobile device you can buy. The RK3588s power it and has a 5.5-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and a USB-C connector with HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort capabilities.
TJD T80
The TJD T80 falls into the category of humorous handhelds. According to reports, this all-in-one Android handheld costs only $199 and has an 8-inch display and a 10,000mAh battery. We wouldn't suggest this despite the temptation, especially at this price.
GameMT E6 Plus
The GameMT E6 Plus is worth a look for those who adore the shape of a Steam Deck but prefer something more compact. Stubbs gave us a quick hands-on in the most recent podcast, and there may be some promise.
Software and Custom Firmware
Don't get me wrong, discussing gear is thrilling and fun. However, if a fantastic handheld device isn't functional, what good is it? Here's everything you might have missed this week because that's where software and custom firmware come into play.
muOS BEANS
The eagerly anticipated muOS BEANS update is now available for the Anbernic RG35XX handheld line. On the surface, everything may appear relatively modest, yet this couldn't be further from the truth. Numerous changes have been made, such as support for the RG28XX and RG35XX SP. To learn more, visit our announcement page by clicking the link below.

DesktopOS for H700 Handhelds
I don't know why no one had considered this earlier, but it's now possible to convert your Anbernic RG35XX handheld into a real computer. In any case, Linux powers everything, while DesktopOS provides a desktop experience. Although it's still in its early stages of development, you should utilize a USB hub to connect devices like a mouse and keyboard to a larger display.
Spruce for the Miyoo A30
To put it mildly, the software experience on the Miyoo A30 has been criticized for being subpar. Spruce is here to improve things while we wait for something similar to GarlicOS. It's a simplified version of the stock Miyoo firmware with numerous fixes and enhancements. Thank heavens for the community, but Miyoo may be able to get its act together someday.
OnionOS v. 4.3.1
Things have been quiet since the latest Onion update was published in February. With the release of Onion version 4.3.1, which includes numerous updates, the project is fortunately still alive. Along with many other enhancements, we offer "improved GB, GBC, and GBA grid overlays."
From the Writers
While there's always a ton of news to discuss and cover, we also step back and offer something different for everyone to appreciate. Over this week, you may have missed these more editorial-style articles.

FAKE: The Powkiddy K56 Looks to Make a Splash
We briefly believed that the Powkiddy K56 would be a big hit in the retro handheld market. But it wasn't meant to be. Powkiddy verified that the K56 is not a device; it is working shortly after we published our article about it, after it was discovered in a leaked product roadmap. While it lasted, it was enjoyable.

From the Abyss: Ban's Bins 1
I don't believe I've ever witnessed somebody go through waves of gadgets like Ban does. He walked us through the first episode of "From the Abyss: Ban's Bins," even though his inventory of gadgets is expanding hourly. Here, he describes a few vintage handhelds that were chosen at random and shares his opinions on whether they are still in use, why he owns them, and whether he would advise others to purchase them.

muOS Setup Guide for Anbernic Handhelds
I produced a muOS Setup Guide before the Beans update, which was a fortunate coincidence. Zu and I will show you how to configure and operate Beans on your classic portable device.
